The CyberKnife’s flexible robotic arm provides unparalleled access to previously unreachable tumors. The CyberKnife offers new hope for those patients previously diagnosed with inoperable tumors.
What is CyberKnife®?
CyberKnife® is no-incision, stereotactic surgery that directly attacks hard-to-reach
tumors by delivering high levels of radiation. Not only does this revolutionary,
high-tech robotic arm destroy tumors from a wide variety of angles, it also has
incredible precision that enables the treatment of tumors with sub-millimeter
accuracy while carefully sparing nearby healthy tissues.
Because no incisions are made, the procedure is painless, and there are no debilitating side effects or extended recovery periods. It is typically an outpatient procedure and
involves the administration of radiation beams delivered
from different directions. Before each beam is delivered, the image-guidance
system takes X-ray images and compares them to the original CT scan taken
during the planning process. This ensures that the radiation is targeted directly
at the tumor while avoiding critical structures and healthy tissues. The robotic arm then moves into position to deliver a beam of radiation.
